Accessibility Statement
SafeNest Senior is written for readers aged roughly 35 to 70 — adult children researching care options and seniors researching their own safety. A site about senior safety that isn’t usable by seniors would defeat its own purpose, so accessibility isn’t an add-on here; it’s built into the base design decisions.
What We’ve Built In
Keyboard navigation
A visible “Skip to main content” link appears on keyboard focus at the top of every page, and every interactive element — menus, accordions, the quiz, forms — is reachable and operable without a mouse.
Larger touch targets
Buttons and links use a minimum 44px touch target sitewide, and 52–56px on higher-friction elements like quiz answers — above the WCAG 2.5.8 minimum, sized for readers who may have reduced fine motor precision.
Visible focus indicators
Every link, button, and form field shows a clear, high-contrast focus outline when navigated to by keyboard — not just a faint browser default.
Reduced motion support
If your device has “reduce motion” enabled in system settings, this site automatically disables animations and transitions rather than ignoring that preference.
Screen reader support
Navigation regions, forms, and interactive widgets carry descriptive ARIA labels — for example, the footer’s multiple navigation menus are each labeled distinctly so screen reader users know which is which.
High-contrast support
If your system is set to high-contrast mode, buttons on this site render with a visible solid border rather than relying on color alone.
Text & readability
- Body text defaults to a minimum of 15px, larger on mobile, with generous line-height for readability.
- Text and background color combinations are chosen to meet WCAG AA contrast minimums (our dark sections, for example, use a deep forest-teal background specifically chosen for high contrast with white text, rather than pure black which is harsher to read for extended periods).
- Headings follow a logical, nested order (H1 → H2 → H3) so screen reader users can navigate by heading structure rather than reading the whole page linearly.
Images
Meaningful images — like the hero photo illustrating home safety — include descriptive alt text. Purely decorative images, such as small icons next to a heading that already states the same information in text, are intentionally marked so screen readers skip them rather than reading out redundant descriptions. This is standard practice, not a gap: an image alt text that just repeats an adjacent heading adds noise, not information.
Where We’re Still Working
We haven’t completed a formal audit. Everything above reflects deliberate design decisions built into the site, but we have not yet commissioned an independent WCAG 2.1 AA conformance audit by a third-party accessibility specialist. We’re stating that plainly rather than implying a certification that doesn’t exist.
Older content may lag newer standards. As we update templates and publish new guides, accessibility patterns improve — a handful of older pages may not yet reflect our current standard. If you find one, please tell us (see below) and we’ll prioritize it.
Reporting an Accessibility Problem
If any part of this site is difficult to use with a keyboard, screen reader, or other assistive technology, we want to know specifically — not so we can add a disclaimer, but so we can fix it. Email hello@safenestsenior.com with:
- The page URL where you ran into the problem
- What you were trying to do
- What assistive technology or browser settings you were using, if relevant
We aim to respond within 2–3 business days and will follow up once a fix is in place.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this site WCAG 2.1 AA certified?
No — we target WCAG 2.1 AA as our design standard, but we have not commissioned a formal third-party audit to certify conformance. We’d rather say that plainly than overstate our compliance status.
Can I adjust text size or use a screen reader on this site?
Yes. The site is built with relative font sizing and semantic HTML, so browser zoom, OS-level text scaling, and screen readers (like VoiceOver, NVDA, or JAWS) should all work as expected. If something doesn’t, please report it using the contact details above.
Does the risk quiz work without a mouse?
Yes — every quiz question, answer option, and the “Retake Assessment” button are all keyboard-operable, and each step announces itself to screen readers as you move through it.
